Finding it difficult to unwind? Knitting may be the cure!
Many of you probably have very busy lives between work and family. Or perhaps you are the total opposite – and have a lot of free time to do what you please! Whatever your lifestyle, knitting is an amazing creative outlet, that can have a positive impact on your health and well-being.
Countless studies have shown that partaking in creative activities is beneficial for us, and there are many that are specifically about knitting. Women have reported taking up knitting for relaxation, stress relief, and general creativity! It’s known among knitters as the best therapy, and making a simple pattern is so calming. Mindfulness is a concept in Psychology in which people practice bringing their attention to the present moment; to try and stop the mind wandering and focusing on other thoughts and stresses. This can explain then, why knitting is so relaxing, and has the power to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression!
The sense of accomplishment upon finishing a project, or the reaction of a family member or friend when you give them a hand-knitted gift, also brings a lot of happiness.
In an increasingly digital world, knitting is a great hobby where you can do something with your hands while having a tech-detox! So, if you’re guilty of spending a little too much time on your phone or Ipad, it might be for you; and you could even join a class and meet other knitters!
On the other hand, knitting addiction is actually a thing. That doesn’t sound like such a bad thing right? Although rare, it has been reported that it can spiral out of control, where people have reported being unable to stop, knitting 24/7 and spending all their money on yarn! This has left people feeling terrible – So knit responsibly! 😉
