Today we will show you how you can sew a practical yet pretty toy sack! Anyone who has children knows that there are always toys and stationery lying around everywhere! Simply sew a toy sack with a cord around it, which will allow you to pull everything together into a toy sack and get a grip on the chaos. This is also the perfect DIY project to help you use any leftover fabric you may still have.
This DIY is quick and easy to sew and looks great. And what’s particularly great: You can choose which size you like and adapt it perfectly to fit your personal needs!
Materials Needed
For this DIY we selected fabrics with a beautiful pattern and a strong canvas fabric. We have also selected a thick cord that will be used later to pull the sack together.
You will need:
– Several cotton fabrics (dimensions depending on the size of your toy sack; see below)
– A thick cord
– A sewing machine
– Iron and ironing board
– Sewing thread
– Tape measure, scissors, safety pins, fabric clips or pins
Required amount of fabric depending on the size of the toy sack:
Large toy sack (diameter: 1.00 m / circumference: approx. 3.14 m):
– 1 m of fabric for the outer fabric
– 1 m of fabric for the lining
– 4 x (0.1 x 0.7 m) of another Fabric for the cord edging
– 3.50 m bias tape or cord
Small toy sack (diameter: 0.50 m / circumference: approx.1.57 m):
0.5 x 0.5 m of fabric for the outer fabric
0.5 x 0.5 m of fabric for the lining
4 x (0.1 x 0.3 m) of another fabric for the cord edging
2.50 m bias tape or cord
For these instructions, we have sewn the small toy bag, which has a diameter of 0.5 m.
The cut
Use the above information to cut each piece of fabric.
Instructions
The next step: First prepare the circle. To do this, fold one of your fabric squares twice, pin a pen with a thread to the central corner and use this DIY circle to draw the round line for the edge.
Do the same with the top and bottom fabrics, then use the guide to cut the circles.
Now you have all the pattern pieces ready.
Iron the fabrics.
Then take the rectangles and fold the short sides of all four pieces of fabric inwards twice and fix them with fabric clips.
Sew the folded edges together.
Then pin the four rectangles around evenly on one of the circles and fix them to the edge. These will be the tubes through which your cord will later be woven through.
This is what it looks like up close.
Now sew all the tubes tightly to secure them to your fabric circle.
Now put the other fabric circle right sides together on the first fabric circle. Secure the edges all around with fabric clips or pins. Leave an opening (here between the fabric clips) which you can turn your sewing project through later.
Sew with a simple lock stitch with a sewing allowance of approx. 1 cm all around to secure all layers together. Don’t forget to leave the turning opening free.
Now you can turn your sewing project inside out through the opening.
Use your iron to neatly iron the edges of the curve and the turning opening.
Then use a simple close-edged lockstitch to close the turning opening and also to sew once around the edge to make the DIY look neat.
Now all you need is a safety pin to pull the cord through all the loops.
Tadaa, this is what your finished toy sack looks like when its open. Its cute right? Now it can be filled with toys. If you sew it even bigger, you can use it as a carpet, so that all the larger toys can also be placed on it.
Because the toy sack has two different fabrics you can even turn the sack around and use it from both sides!
When toys are in the way, the sack is simply pulled together with the cord and all the bits and bobs disappear at no time at all.
