Hello I’m Ruby and this is my first blog post for the Makerist, I usually post my blogs over on Ruby Rose Sews where I concentrate on sustainable fashion and creative sewing projects. Today I am picking my favourite Makerist patterns for Autumn. I wanted to choose some brilliant Autumn basics that work together as a capsule wardrobe. A capsule wardrobe, is a brilliant sustainable fashion choice as you can mix and match all the pieces together to create many different looks.
I always think the best basic piece that every wardrobe needs is a t-shirt. This Jeanne T shirt by Ready To Sew is a perfect slouchy autumn style. The pattern is really versatile and even has a T shirt dress pattern included with it. It would look great made with longer sleeves too. You could even sew a few different lengths and layer them up.
The next on my must make list is a great transitional piece that goes from summer to Autumn easily. As the weather gets cooler the hems get longer and this Hestia long skirt by I AM is perfect. I’m imagining this in a thick organic cotton, or even a wool.
Look at this amazing chore jacket, perfect for just throwing on as the evenings get chillier. This is the piece I have decided to make first, it’s so versatile and just works layered over so many different outfits. It was a lovely pattern to make, and for some of the trickier bits like the collar, they have links to step by step photos.
I’m so pleased with how it turned out and have worn it non stop ever since. I love the practicality of all the pockets but with a 50s men’s workwear vibe. This Julien Chore Jacket by Ready to Sew would work in a thick denim or twill, or a soft corduroy for a more slouchy overshirt look.
I for one, love a jumpsuit, and this boilersuit style is timeless. The Jean Paul boilersuit, also by Ready to Sew is another classic workwear style and would look great paired with the Julien chore jacket above. A relaxed pattern this can be made short or long sleeved. They even have an expansion pack available with different pockets and a dress version too.
Now, I live in England, so along with the colourful leaves and lovely pumpkins, we get rain and lots of it! So, when I saw the I AM Jacques raincoat I knew it would be a perfect Autumn pattern. The version here with waterproof yellow and striped lining is just such a classic match that I wouldn’t want to change a thing.
Another Autumn basic is a classic sweater, and this slouchy Alex sweater pattern by Lenaline Patterns is just perfect. This would look great layered over the long Hestia skirt or underneath any of the jackets. You can make an early Autumn version is soft sweatshirt or terry. When it gets even cooler you could create a really luxe version from high quality wool or cashmere.
So, my final selection isn’t exactly for Autumn, it can be for any time of year, but it’s just so fun I couldn’t not include it. It’s the Surimani hat pattern by Opian, a wrap turban style hat that I just want to make in every fabric. This would look great in bright or iridescent fabric for a night out or in a warmer wool for a colder evening.
I hope you’ve enjoyed my selections, I’m going to be gradually making some of these patterns over Autumn and you can follow my progress over on my blog Ruby Rose Sews and Instagram. We will also be running a giveaway starting on Friday and ending on Sunday where 3 of our lucky followers on Instagram can win the Chore jacket.
