In this blog, we will show you how you can sew a fabric bowl yourself! Many of us have a lot of odds and ends lying around at home or on our work desk and these fabric bowls are perfect for storing items such as adhesive tape, pens or other small items. This is also the perfect DIY project to help you use any leftover fabric you may still have.
The project can be sewn in any size you like! It’s easy to sew quickly and is suitable for beginners!
Depending on which fabrics you choose, you can sew very simple fabric bowls, or make them as eye-catching as you like with bright colours and vibrant patterns. Let’s get going!
Material For The Fabric Bowl
For this project, depending on the size of your fabric bowls, you can either use up old fabric scraps or use new fabrics. We decided on bowls that need fabric squares measuring 21 x 21 cm and 15 x 15 cm. For each fabric bowl, you need two fabrics (one for the inside and one for the outside) and a piece of Vlieseline H 250 (each 2 cm smaller than the fabric). You can of course sew the fabric bowls in larger sizes and use other square sizes.
For these instructions, we will show you how to sew the fabric bowls in 21 x 21 cm. We also sewed several bowls at once and made them in several different sizes.
What you need for the fabric bowl:
- Cotton fabrics in the dimensions 21 x 21 cm
- Vlieseline H 250 in the dimensions 19 x 19 cm
- A sewing machine
- Iron and ironing board
- Sewing thread
- Scissors, tape measure or ruler, fabric clips or pins
First, cut out all the fabrics and the fleece. We prepared all the materials for several fabric bowls straight away.
Sew The Fabric Bowl Yourself
Iron your cotton fabrics.
Then iron the fleece onto the back of your cotton fabrics.
Take two matching pieces of fabric (one with fleece and one without) and place the sides together. Secure them with cloth clips.
Sew the fabric securely all around and leave an opening on one side for turning (seen here between the fabric clips).
Carefully cut off the corners without damaging the seam.
Turn your fabric squares inside out.
Now we have prepared a whole batch of squares.
Iron the fabrics and trim the edges neatly.
Close the turning openings with fabric clips.
Close the openings and sew all around with a simple close-edged lockstitch seam.
Fold the corners as shown in the photo and mark a distance of 2 cm from the tips with a pin.
Do this for all four corners, as this is how the shape is created. The larger you set the distance between the tip and the marking, the deeper your bowl will be.
Sew the folded corners together at the mark.
Tadaa, done!
