Easter is approaching and we are already in the mood for the traditional search for colorful chocolate eggs in the park or in our own garden, we are feeling the spring fever and we are also really looking forward to delicious baked goods for the holidays. So that you and your loved ones are perfectly protected from all the mess in the kitchen and also to get you in a great mood for Easter, we have a step-by-step guide for this cute rabbit apron including a free pattern for you.
The rabbit apron is closed at the neck with Velcro and tied at the hip. It has a practical pocket on the front, where you can have your kitchen utensils or your recipe at hand.
The special highlight: The rabbit’s face is sewn on and we didn’t miss the opportunity to apply a cute little carrot to the apron for the appliquéd nose. We are so ready for Easter!

How to sew your Rabbit apron:
First, we start by cutting. Download our free pattern for the rabbit apron and cut the fabrics based on the measurements.
Please note: You can sew the apron with just one layer of fabric and simply neaten the edges, but then the apron is quite thin. We simply cut the apron twice, took the fabric twice and sewed it together. More on this later in the instructions.
The next step is ironing. Iron all of the fabrics and pattern pieces, then take care of the pattern pieces for the ears (in pink and white). Cut out the Vliesofix. This is the iron-on fleece with which you can iron on applications and through which the fabric does not warp when sewing on. Iron the Vliesofix onto the back of the pink pattern pieces.
Also, take fleece H640, cut it to size and iron it behind the white cut parts of the ears so that they become nice and fluffy.
Cut out the pink pieces of fabric with the Vliesofix on the back in the shape of ears, then peel off the film from the ironing coating and iron the pink pieces of fabric onto the white pieces of fabric (with the batting on the back).
Time to apply! Grab your sewing machine, set a wide but narrow zigzag stitch (short stitch length so that the gaps are small and a slightly wider stitch so that the needle deflects far) and apply the pink ears to the white fabric.
Now pick up the four yellow strips of fabric. The two short strips are for tying at the nape of the neck and the two long strips are for tying at the hips or waist.
Fold the strips of fabric inwards on one of the short sides with a small flap (as in the photo above at the point where the thumb is) and then fold the strips lengthways to the middle, iron them and then fold the outer edges to the middle again. This creates a beautiful, even band of fabric made of four layers of fabric.
Pin the layers of fabric in place with fabric clips and use a simple lock stitch to topstitch all around once. Do this with all four pieces of fabric.
Now take the two parts of your Velcro fastener and sew it onto the short pieces of fabric that you will use to tie the slacks on your neck. Before doing this, try out how tight you want to it to tie at your neck.
Now it’s time to finish the ears, where the neck fastener comes out. Place the white piece of fabric with the pink appliqué facing up on each ear, then the other white piece of fabric without appliqué on top and the yellow strip of fabric with Velcro in between. Make sure that the end of the yellow strip with the Velcro is sticking out from below and that the other side is flush with the edges of the white pieces of fabric. So that you can close the fastener afterwards, one piece of Velcro must point downwards and one upwards.
Then grab your sewing machine again and stitch the white layers of fabric onto one another in the form of ears. Make sure that the yellow stripe is sewn in on the upper side and that you leave enough space when sewing the ear shape so that you do not sew on the pink appliqué.
Now you can turn the fabric for the rabbit ears inside out and the yellow strips of fabric should look out at the top and close. Press gently over it for a moment and then use a close-edged lockstitch to topstitch the edges.
Now prepare your carrot and do the same steps as the ears: Iron the Vliesofix behind the fabric, cut out the carrot and iron it onto the apron. Then you can topstitch them up with a zigzag stitch.
Next is the bag. Fold all edges about 1 cm each and sew the folded layers of the upper edge onto one another with a lock stitch (but do not sew on the apron!). Then place the bag in the middle of the apron (so that the carrot looks out) and sew it on all around on the sides and at the bottom close to the edge. If you like, you can also put a seam vertically in the middle and thus divide the bag into two compartments.
We continue with the rabbit face. Sew up the nose with a serrated stitch and outline the face with a pencil.
We then recommend clamping a volume fleece behind the front. This makes the apron more handy and fluffy and the face can be sewn on better without the fabric curling up.
Use a narrow zigzag stitch to sew on the bunny’s face.
Clamp the ears right sides together (with the pink appliqué facing down) onto the front of the apron. The pieces of fabric for tying at the hips can be attached to the side at the desired height. Make sure that you put the unfinished side against the edge, as this is the end of the binding that will go away anyway.
Then put the second white fabric for the back on top and pin everything in place.
Now you can sew all the layers together all around. Make sure that you catch the cords for tying and the ears with your seam and sew them in place, and leave an opening at the bottom for turning.
Yippie, that’s it, your apron is ready!
Have fun sewing and happy Easter!
