Rope Rainbow DIY, the great creative trend from the USA: If you have looked at Pinterest or Instagram in the last few weeks, you will have seen the great rainbow decorations with ropes and wires everywhere. We love the trend and were very keen to interpret the topic in our own way.
What better time than Pride Month?
Pride Month dates back to the historic riots in New York in 1969 when the police brutally raided a bar. Since then, the LGBTQI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex) community around the world have been celebrating Christopher Street Day to fight for their rights and acceptance. The rainbow has become the most important symbol of this movement and stands for tolerance and diversity of different ways of life.
At Makerist, too, tolerance and diversity are not just important values with regard to sexual identity and therefore this project was a perfect fit for us.
Now let’s get started with DIY: We were so inspired and in such a good flow that we made two rainbows – a large and a small version. Here we will show you which materials and tools you need. You will probably have a lot of it to hand anyway.
DIY Fibre Rainbow
Materials needed for your project:
- 4m of thick rope
- 1m of thin rope
- yarn in different colours
- wire (stirdy floral wire)
- scissors for cutting rope, wool and wire
- one roll of masking tape or scotch tape
- one needle and thread (transparent or white)
- if you would like – glitter wool as an extra highlight and for hanging the decoration
- optional: key chain for the little rainbow
How to make the rainbow:
Cut the ropes to the desired length and lay them in the form of a rainbow. We decided on six ropes each. Then tape the ends with tape. Here you will loosen the fringes later.
Now take your wire and place it on the rope pieces. Cut wire to the same length as your ropes.
The wire is then tightly wrapped with a colour of yarn per rope and serves to give the ropes stability and shape.
The next steps are to sew all the ropes of a rainbow with a needle and thread and then you can remove the tape and pull the threads of the rope slightly apart at the ends.
This is how it looks without the tape and now all of the ropes can be carefully sewn together. Then just hang it up and if would like to add the key rings and you’re done.
Tadaaaa! Super cute, isn’t it? We especially love DIY with the golden highlight, perfect for Pride Month!
