Its DIY time again! Today we will show you how you can design embroidery hoops with fabric markers and embroidery. This project can be completed quickly and easily and is not only a great decoration project for your home but also a great gift idea. You can make the motifs look abstract and minimalist or turn them into a fun project to do with your children!
For this DIY we used the double fibre fabric pens from Staedtler, which allow you to make your fabric look beautiful as the tips come in two different strengths. The best thing about these pens is that you don’t even have to fix the colour with an iron afterwards, just wait 24 hours until everything is dry. If you cant find these fabric makers any fabric markers will also do the trick!
Lets get started!
Materials for your project
You will need:
– White fabric, e.g. somewhat coarser linen fabric or needlework fabric
– An embroidery hoop
– Fabric Markers
– Embroidery thread
– Embroidery needles with a pointed tip
– Embroidery scissors or other scissors
The double fabric markers from Staedtler are great for all creative projects with fabric. For simple mini DIYs, for elaborate fabric paintings and for quick gift decorations. We recommend these markers however any fabric markers will work!
Design embroidery frames with fabric markers and embroidery
Cut out a piece of fabric that is slightly larger than your hoop. Stretch it on the frame. Then you can decorate the fabric step by step with fabric markers.
We decided to paint both geometric patterns and small lettering for this project. Painting and writing were very easy and convenient with the fabric markers and it almost felt as if you were drawing on paper.
Due to the different strengths and thickness of the two pen tips, you can work very flexibly with thicker and more delicate lines. The pens are great for small-scale painting projects for adults, but you can also give them to children, for example, to paint larger motifs.
After painting, you can put your project aside and let the fabric marker paint dry a little so that you don’t smear anything in the next step. After about an hour we continued and started embroidering the letters.
You could use a lock stitch or cross-stitch to surround or decorate your colourful motifs.
This is how our completed embroidery hoop came out and we loved the end result! Brightly coloured and beautifully designed with a mix of different handicraft techniques!
Now you can clean up the back of your hoop. Take the thread and an embroidery needle, gather the edges on the back like the photo, sew around, pull the thread together firmly and knot the two ends tightly. So that nothing protrudes.
And Voila we are finished! Super cool right?
