THESE 10 SEWING TRICKS WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE EASIER!
1. SEWING STEEPLY SLANTED AND BIAS SEAMS
Many sewing projects involve this. It is particularly suitable for “hiding” seams – as with the inner sides of a pocket, for example. We will show you how easy it is to sew!
Slightly open the slanted seam completely and place it on the fabric edge, where you want to sew it – on the left side of the fabric!
Now place the needles directly into the first fold and fix the line with a straight stitch. It is best to lock at the beginning and end of the seam.
Now fold the slant to the other (not sewed line) and move the slant to the other (right) fabric side.
Put it on the right side of the fabric.
2. OPENING A BUTTONHOLE
It is very annoying when the neatly stitched buttonhole is accidentally cut when the hole is opened. So it won’t happen, there is a simple trick: Fix a pin at the end of the hole, and then use a seam ripper. So the pin acts as a “stopper” and the buttonhole remains intact.
3. USE A CORK WALL!
To keep an overview of your sewing machine needles, you can sort them practically on a cork wall. Place a notepad in a box and label it according to your needles and thicknesses. Then pin the appropriate needle into the appropriate box.
4. THE MAGIC KNOT!
If you find it difficult to get a “very simple” knot by hand into your thread, there is still a simple trick. First, thread the thread through the needle’s eye.
Place the end of the thread on your index finger.
Place the needle over it.
Now wind the thread several times around the needle, while holding the thread end pressed against the needle.
Pull the pieces together and pull them down to the needle end.
Then pull all the thread from the needle down to the end – and voilà: You have a knot!
5. PERFECT HAND-STITCHING!
To maintain the regularity of stitches by hand, you can simply draw two dashes with a marker on your thumb – at the desired distance. This way you get a nice, neat stitch.
6. PEEL FOR PRECISION
For exact lines with the tailor’s chalk, you can just take a peeler and peel along the edges. Do this from both sides – so the piece is perfectly pointed and you can draw perfect lines.
7. SIMPLE AND PRACTICAL: TAPE MEASURE
Stick your measuring tape directly to your work table! Take double-sided tape for this and attach it to the top of the outer edge of the table. Now you can always cut your fabrics precisely!
8. TRIM WITH ZIGZAG SHEARS
If you do not have an overlock machine , it is often tedious to clean the fabric edges. To avoid annoying fraying in cotton fabrics, you can simply take zigzag shears and soften the edges.
9. LABEL YOUR FABRIC
Doesn’t it feel better when everything is in order? So that you have the rest of your material clearly at hand, label a notepad with the appropriate name, fabric type and size and apply the label to the fabric- we did it with tape.
10. OVERLOCK CONES
If you have many unused overlock cones or you prefer sewing with a sewing machine without an overlock, you can still use the big overlock yarn reels with a simple trick. Put the big roll into a coffee cup and then put it into your machine as normal. Now you can sew without the roll falling down.
